Restoring Your System

After running the tests in this chapter, you may want to undo some of the changes made to your system. Specifically, you may want to restart the SMTP service and remove the SQL-NS service account from the Administrators group. (Instructions for doing this are provided in this section.)

Before starting the SMTP service, it's important to clean up the SMTP pickup directory. Old messages left in this directory will be processed as soon as the service starts up, so we must delete the test messages created by the SQL-NS application to prevent them from being sent out. Use the following instructions to clean up the pickup directory and restart the service:

1.

Navigate to the SMTP pickup directory, usually located at C:\Inetpub\mailroot\Pickup.

2.

Delete any email files (files with a .eml extension) created by the SQL-NS application. If other email files are in this directory (created by other applications), you should leave those alone.

3.

From a command prompt, type the following command to start the SMTP service (you need to do this only if the service was running before you stopped it earlier):

 net start SMTPSvc

To remove the SQL-NS service account from the Administrators group, use the following instructions. After you run these instructions, any attempts to deliver notifications with the SMTP delivery protocol will fail.

1.

From the Start menu, right-click My Computer and choose Manage from the context menu that appears. The Computer Management window opens.

2.

In the tree in the left pane of the Computer Management window, select the Local Users and Groups node.

3.

Double-click the Groups folder in the right pane.

4.

Double-click the Administrators group to open its properties page.

5.

Select the SQL-NS service account name in the list of group members.

6.

Click the Remove button. The service account should no longer appear in the list of members.

7.

Click OK to close the Administrators group property page.

8.

Click OK to close the Administrators group property page and then close the Computer Management window.
