In this chapter, we covered the basics of package management, including RPM, Solaris, and source code packages. We also covered complete installations of the libpcap and WinPcap libraries, and Ethereal for UNIX-based and Windows systems. We also learned how to install the necessary prerequisite software, and troubleshoot dependency issues. You are now armed with the knowledge and software necessary to continue with this book.

As stated previously in this chapter, it is important to keep your Ethereal installation up to date. This includes the packet capture libraries, the supporting prerequisite software, and the Ethereal software itself. You should also visit the Ethereal site frequently to keep up on the latest announcements, as well as subscribing to some of the mailing lists. Computer security is an ever-changing technology, and it is necessary to keep up with things to avoid system compromises.

We also strongly recommend that you keep your OS up to date as well, especially when it comes to security updates and patches. Windows makes this easy through the Windows Update interface. Red Hat Linux also has the option for Red Hat Network (RHN) updates. Solaris 9.0 contains a new feature called Patch Manager that provides automatic patch inventory and configuration-based analysis of systems.

All of these parts will come together to form a solid network analysis system that will assist your network troubleshooting and security efforts for years to come.
