The Oracle7 Server Enterprise Edition is part of the Oracle7 universal data server; it includes the Oracle7 database and client/server tools and utilities. Oracle7 Server is available on more than 80 hardware and operating system platforms, including VMS, MVS, VM, HP MPE/XL, Siemens, ICL, Novell NetWare, OS/2, Windows NT, Macintosh, and more than 40 UNIX platforms.

This chapter presents an overview of Oracle7 Server and its major components , as well as its relationship with other parts of the Oracle7 universal data server. Oracle7 Server is different from Personal Oracle7 and Oracle7 Workgroup Server. This chapter compares these three Oracle packages and discusses how Oracle7 Server differs from the other two Oracle packages. Each of the Oracle packages is tailored to meet specific client/server application development and deployment needs. This chapter explains when it is appropriate to use Oracle7 Server and how it meets your business and technical needs.

An Overview of Oracle7 Server

Oracle7 Server is a full-function Oracle7 database with integrated client/server tools and utilities. This section gives you an overview of Oracle7 Server and looks at its differences from other Oracle packages. It also discusses what components are included in Oracle7 Server.

Oracle7 Server Components

Oracle7 Server includes the multiuser Oracle7 database with the Distributed options, Advanced Replication option, Oracle database utilities, graphical tools, SQL products, SQL*Net, Secure Network Services, Oracle Objects for OLE, Oracle7 ODBC driver, and online documentation. The Oracle7 Server components are categorized into server or client software. Table 8.1 summarizes the primary components of the server software of Oracle7 Server on six operating system platforms. For a complete list of all components and detailed descriptions, refer to your Oracle7 Server User 's Guide or Oracle7 Server Installation Guide.

The client software of Oracle7 Server is basically the same as that of Oracle7 Workgroup Server and is summarized in Table 6.2 of Chapter 6, "Oracle Workgroup Server." Oracle7 Server 7.3 includes several new database features, including a standby database, a bitmap index, hash joins, and partition views. The important new features, options, tools, and utilities are explained later in this chapter.

Oracle7 Server and Oracle7 Universal Data Server

The Oracle7 universal data server supports both relational and multimedia information. It contains seven major components:

  • Oracle7 Relational Database Server
  • Oracle Video Server
  • Oracle WebServer
  • Oracle Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) option
  • Oracle Messaging option
  • Oracle Spatial Data option
  • Oracle ConText option

Oracle7 Server is the relational database component of the Oracle7 universal data server. This section discusses the way in which Oracle7 Server is integrated with other parts of the Oracle7 universal data server.

Oracle Video Server

Oracle Video Server enables corporations to develop and deploy multimedia applications in an enterprise client/server environment. This server can store, manage, and deliver full-screen, full-motion video and audio to multiple clients concurrently. Oracle Video Server contains three components: Oracle Video Server, Oracle Video Client, and Oracle Media Net. Oracle Video Client includes support for Oracle Media Objects, Oracle Power Objects, and a Web plug-in to enable video to be displayed from Netscape plug-in compatible Web browsers. Oracle Media Net is a special networking software that enables Oracle Video Server to communicate with Oracle Video clients in a distributed network.

Oracle Video Server is integrated with Oracle7 Server to provide a complete information-management solution to corporations. Thus, the corporate database applications can continue to run from Oracle7 Server, and users can have concurrent read and write access to the relational database. At the same time, multiple users can watch the same video over their streams without contention . Each user can play, pause, rewind, and fast forward his or her own stream.

Oracle WebServer

Oracle WebServer is an HTTP server and is integrated tightly with Oracle7 Server. When a user makes an HTTP request, the Oracle Web Listener can access Oracle7 Server through the PL/SQL Agent and deliver the results to the user in HTML format. The Web Request Broker (WRB) interface enables the PL/SQL Agent WRB service to communicate with the Oracle Web Listener. Oracle WebServer therefore can deliver dynamic HTML pages without needing to write CGI programs or Perl scripts. Figure 8.1 shows the Oracle WebServer administration in HTML format. Chapter 9, "Oracle Web Application Server 3.0," discusses Oracle WebServer in detail.

Oracle OLAP Option

The key features of the Oracle OLAP option are Oracle Express Server, Oracle Express Objects, Oracle Express Analyzer, Oracle Financial Analyzer, and Oracle Sales Analyzer. The key engine of an Oracle OLAP option is the Oracle Express Server, which enables online analytical processing.

Oracle7 Server and Oracle Express Server are tightly integrated with each other. Oracle Express Server supports user-defined functions and stored procedures, which allow Oracle Express Server to access Oracle7 Server. Oracle Express Server uses a multidimensional data model to enable users to query and analyze corporate data efficiently without writing any special programs. Users can perform what-if scenarios, forecasting, and financial modeling. Oracle Express Server also enables users to generate business graphics and to perform data acquisition and database management.
