Chapter 15. Terminal Services for Windows Server 2003

 <  Day Day Up  >

One powerful application for the ProLiant server is Microsoft Terminal Services. Terminal Services delivers Windows-based applications, or the Windows desktop itself, to virtually any computing device, including those that cannot run Windows.

When a user runs an application on Terminal Server, the application execution takes place on the server, and only keyboard, mouse, and display information is transmitted over the network. Each user sees only his or her individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system (OS), and is independent of any other client session.

Compared to Windows 2000 Terminal Services, Terminal Services in Windows Server 2003 offers a server-based platform that is more scalable, more reliable, and more manageable. New options for application deployment increase the efficiency of data access over low bandwidth. An improved client interface, support for a wide variety of data redirection types, and an array of client deployment options, combined with new and improved server management tools and security enhancements, make it much easier to manage Terminal Services and Windows Server 2003-based computers. This chapter describes various aspects relating to deploying Terminal Services, including benefits, features for the client and server functions, administrative tools, Terminal Services Licensing Server, how to design the Terminal Services infrastructure, and an excellent case study to show how a company designed and deployed Terminal Services, to help you in your design and deployment.
