You are an administrator who must design and install MetaFrame XP within your environment. You plan to upgrade your existing MetaFrame 1.8 farm consisting of three servers to MetaFrame XP while adding two more servers to the farm. In addition, you must ensure that all applicable farm settings and applications are upgraded without any user impact on the existing client base. Lastly, each client must automatically be upgraded to the latest client to support this change without any notification. Lastly, you must be able to monitor client installation usage to determine what clients have not been upgraded yet. Determine the steps required to upgrade your existing MetaFrame 1.8 farm to MetaFrame XP while meeting all of the previous requirements.

The following steps are required to install MetaFrame XP into the existing MetaFrame 1.8 environment. The additional steps needed to meet each of the requirements are placed throughout this list where required.

1. Select a data store design to meet the farm requirements. Based upon the criteria, any of the database options could fit into this environment.

2. Create a zone design that fits this environment. Because this is a single small farm without mention of remote sites, the single default zone should be sufficient.

3. Back up all servers and application settings in case problems arise.

4. Install MetaFrame XP on the server acting as the ICA master browser. Configure required components during installation, including name of existing MetaFrame 1.8 farm, data store design, and activation of interoperability mode.

5. Configure published applications to work with MetaFrame XP server and ensure all functionality exists.

6. Upgrade the two remaining MetaFrame 1.8 servers to MetaFrame XP and ensure complete functionality exists.

7. Once completed, remove interoperability mode from the server farm.

8. Add and configure two new MetaFrame XP servers into the existing server farm.

9. Upgrade client update database if not completed during installation of each server. Configure database options to upgrade without intervention and to log all software client downloads.
