You are the lead engineer for a firm with a medium-sized Citrix farm of about 50 MetaFrame 1.8 servers. After migration, you expect your farm to grow to 100+ servers which could be in different locations. Provide a brief overview of how to begin your migration to MetaFrame XP that will allow for a seamless transition to the new platform.

Begin with setting up a data store server. We expect to expand our Citrix offering in the future so we choose to implement a dedicated data store on a Microsoft SQL 2000 server. After the database administrator certifies the SQL server, we begin with upgrading the server we expect to become the data collector. Once the server is upgraded to Windows 2000 Server, MetaFrame XP is installed. We create a new XP farm with the same name as the 1.8 farm and set the XP farm to run in mixed mode. A second server is migrated and the applications are integrated and tested on the new platform, which is then certified to be production ready. We include the new server as a publisher of the applications and test the farm interoperability. After a successful test, we slowly begin migrating the remainder of the servers until all are on board. A procedure is developed to update the Program Neighborhood to use TCP/IP+HTTP instead of UDP for ICA service location. Everything is thoroughly tested and the migration is deemed a success.
