TROUBLESHOOTING TOOLS


  1. Network monitors ” These devices monitor the network at strategic points for performance or degradation of performance.

  2. Protocol analyzers ” Provide real-time traffic and packet analysis. These are sometimes referred to as sniffers .

  3. Cable testers ” Tests physical cable for faults, breaks, or termination problems.

  4. Multimeters ” Takes measurements of voltage, resistance, or current.

  5. Time Domain Reflector ” Uses pulses of current to locate shorts or breaks in metallic cabling. Optical time domain reflectors are used to test fiber- optic cabling.

  6. Cisco Troubleshooting Model:

    • Define the problem or issue

    • Gather facts

    • Consider the possibilities

    • Create an action plan

    • Implement an action plan

    • Observe the results

    • Document the solution

    • Iterate the process
