Chapter Summary

You learned about a number of commands, subcommands, and syntaxes in this chapter. You need to know these for the exam, and you should know when to use each of them in troubleshooting your network from a Windows host. Pay attention to the commands and what is displayed by the output of each one. If you don't, it may come back to haunt you on the exam.

You need to remember that the ping , ipconfig , tracert , and pathping commands use ICMP ECHO messages to test for connectivity. These commands have many syntaxes and you need to know what each syntax does.

The nslookup command is used to diagnose and correct DNS query problems. This command operates in two modes which have unique commands and syntaxes.

You also need to remember the following commands, what they're used for, and each of their subcommands and syntaxes:

  • The netstat command and syntaxes are used to troubleshoot port listening and session problems.

  • The nbtstat command and syntaxes are used to troubleshoot NetBIOS issues.

  • The arp command and it syntaxes are used to troubleshoot and display IP-to-MAC-address mappings on a local host.

  • The route command, its subcommands, and syntaxes are used to view, add, or change local host route mappings.

  • The telnet command is used for terminal emulation and creating a session between two hosts to communicate.

  • The ftp command allows two hosts to communicate and share files.
