Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment

I've included a self-assessment in this Exam Cram to help you evaluate your readiness to tackle the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification. It should also help you understand what you need to master the topic of this book: namely, Exam 642-831, "Support 3.0." Before you tackle this self-assessment, however, I'll talk about the concerns you might face when pursuing a CCNP certification and what an ideal candidate might look like.

A CCNP in the Real World

In the next section, I describe an ideal CCNP candidate, knowing full well that only a few certification candidates meet this ideal. In fact, my description of that ideal candidate might seem downright scary. But take heart; although the requirements to obtain a CCNP certification may seem formidable, they are by no means impossible to meet. However, you should be keenly aware that it does take time, requires some expense, and calls for a substantial effort.

You can get all the real-world motivation you need from knowing that many others have gone before you. You can follow in their footsteps. If you're willing to tackle the process seriously and do what it takes to gain the necessary experience and knowledge, you can take and pass the certification tests. In fact, the Exam Crams and the companion CCNP Exam Preps are designed to make it as easy as possible for you to prepare for these exams, but prepare you must!

The same, of course, for other Cisco career certifications, including

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), which certifies candidates in the basics of networking, Cisco component configuration, and Cisco network troubleshooting.

  • Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA), which is a basic certification for those who design high-level networks.

  • Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), which is the equivalent of a CCNP certification for those who design advanced and complex networks. Some of the exams needed for the CCNP exam are the same needed for the CCDP certification.

  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), which is known as the black belt in networking today. This exam is famous for its difficulty; those who obtain this certification easily find employment in the industry today.

The Ideal CCNP Candidate

Just to give you some idea of what an ideal CCNP candidate is like, here are some relevant statistics about the background and experience such an individual might have. Don't worry if you don't meet these qualifications (or, indeed, if you don't even come close) because this world is far from ideal. Where your qualifications fall short, simply be aware that you have more work to do.

That said, the ideal candidate for the 642-831 certification exam will have the following:

  • Professional or academic training in network theory, concepts, and operations. This training includes areas such as networking media, Cisco switch and router configuration, troubleshooting, LAN and WAN transmission techniques, networking terminology, networking protocols, network operating systems, services, and applications.

  • Three-plus years of professional networking experience, including experience with Ethernet, token ring, modems, and other networking media. This experience must include installation, configuration, upgrades, and troubleshooting experience.

  • A good knowledge of the OSI Reference model, IPX suite of protocols, and the TCP/IP suite of protocols. This knowledge should include a thorough understanding of name resolution and subnetting.

The length of time needed to prepare for the exam can always be decreased by a good instructor, mentor, and a good self-learner. The preceding qualifications may seem overwhelming, but there have been many people before you who have overcome the challenge. You can too.
