Scenario 4”Determining the Probable Source IIFor this final scenario, let's look at Figure C.3 a little differently. We already know that the first floor PCs can successfully ping themselves, but cannot ping their default gateway. What would be the most likely scenario if the PCs on the second floor could successfully ping themselves and the Fast Ethernet 0/0 interface, which is the default gateway of the PCs on the first floor? If you know Cisco devices, you know that an address on a router interface is only successfully pingable if the interface is up and the protocols are configured correctly. This means that the Fast Ethernet 0/0 interface must be functioning and the configured address must be correct. Since the PCs can ping each other, this pretty much narrows down the possibilities to a single item. The default gateway configured on the PCs is wrong or not configured. |
