Installation

[ LiB ]

You can install the IDS MC on either Windows or Solaris operating systems. This section identifies the hardware and software requirements and key points for server installation on both platforms. Then, we go into client access requirements for the Windows and Solaris platforms.

The key server minimum requirements for Windows-based machines are

  • IBM PC-compatible with 1GHz Pentium CPU.

  • 100Mbps network connection or faster.

  • 1GB RAM.

  • 2GB virtual memory.

  • 12GB free hard drive space.

  • New Technology File System (NTFS) format.

  • The server should not be a primary domain controller (PDC) or a backup domain controller (BDC).

  • Terminal Services should not be running on the server.

  • Windows 2000 Server or Professional and Service Pack 3 (SP3).

  • Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager 3.510 or later.

Do not attempt to install the IDS MC on a domain controller or host on which the Cisco Secure Policy Manager has been installed.

The key server minimum requirements for Solaris-based machines are

  • UltraSPARC II, Iiii, or IIe chipsets

  • UltraSPARC III or IIIc chipsets

  • 1GB RAM

  • 2GB swap space

  • 512MB swap space on the hard drive

  • Solaris 2.7 or 2.8 system software

Installation for both Windows and Solaris-based platforms is straightforward. With Windows, you simply follow the bouncing ball with the Windows installation wizard, as you would expect. To install IDS MC on a Solaris machine, you log on with root privileges, launch the setup.sh file, and then follow a series of simple dialogs. Remember these key points, which apply to both installations:

  • CiscoWorks Common Services is required.

  • You need to enter and confirm a password for the Sybase SQL database.
