Online Help in SAP R/

SAP R/3 provides two kinds of online help: basic help (which you learn about in this lesson) and task-level help (covered in Lesson 6, "Using Task-Level Help"). Learning how to make the most of both types of help will move you much closer to becoming a self-sufficient SAP R/3 user .

Where to Start with Help

The first help you should look at is the basic help that "getting started" provides. While you are learning to use SAP R/3, you may need to check this kind of help from time to time to remind you how to use parts of the SAP R/3 user interface. To use the basic help system, follow these steps:

  1. From the SAP R/3 screen, select Help, Getting Started. SAP R/3 displays a help window, similar to that shown in Figure 5.1. (The Help menu is available from any screen in SAP R/3.)

Figure 5.1. The first basic help window.

    TIP

    Not Quite the Same?

SAP R/3 help got a major facelift for version 4.0, going to a Web-browser style interface, as shown in Figure 5.1. Your help window may be presented in a slightly different style from that presented here.

    TIP

    Two windows

The left pane is the index; the right pane is the Help file.

  2. Use the vertical scrollbar in the right pane to move down until you see a screen like the one shown in Figure 5.2. You can visit this section of Help whenever you need a refresher.

Figure 5.2. SAP explains how you can use the interface.
  3. Click the round button LO to move into the Logistics section of the SAP R/3 help system.

  4. Use the vertical scrollbar in the left pane to move down through the index. You can click any items in the left pane to open the help text in the right pane (see Figure 5.3).

Searching the Help Files

Sometimes, the help you need isn't displayed in either window. You can use the search feature to locate this information:

  1. From any help window, click the Search button (binoculars) below the menu bar.

  2. Fill in the text of the item for which you want to search.

The Glossary

Sometimes listening to people talk about SAP R/3 is like listening to a conversation in a foreign language. To understand what they're talking about, you can access a glossary through SAP R/3's help system (see Figure 5.4). Follow these steps:

  1. From any SAP R/3 help screen, click the round Glossary (ABC) button.

  2. Click the letter (on the alphabet shown on the top) of the word you need defined.

  3. Scroll down the left pane until you see the word you need defined.

  4. Click the word to bring up the definition in the right pane.

Getting Help on Messages

Sometimes, the messages that SAP R/3 displays on the message line aren't clear to all users. If an onscreen message confuses you, follow these steps:

  1. Anytime SAP R/3 displays a message, double-click it for more explanation. SAP displays a more detailed version of the error message in a pop-up window.

  2. After you read the message, click Close to remove the pop-up window.

In this lesson, you learned how to use SAP R/3's basic help, glossaries, and message help. In the next lesson, you learn how to use task-level help.
