The Monster Under the Bed

Workplace learning and performance professionals have long believed that they should have a seat at the executive table. Yet, other types of executives are never promoted to the table without the knowledge and skills addressed in this book. Executives do not accept people without these skills as their equals or trusted advisors. By expressing dislike or even fear of finance and numbers , WLP professionals must bear much of the responsibility for the challenges we face stemming from a lack of respect from executives, absence of influence within the organization, unreasonable budget constraints for WLP programs, and no seat at the table.

Simply put, WLP professionals do not communicate their value. WLP professionals have not been equipped to communicate their value. And, because executives cannot perceive WLP professionals ‚ value, it simply does not exist for the executives.

A fear of finance is like the monster that children think might be under their beds. One day, when they are brave enough to look, they realize that the monster doesn ‚ t really exist at all. The concepts in this book may seem big and scary, but once they are explored and learned, you ‚ ll wonder what you were really so afraid of. You ‚ ll be free of the monster! You ‚ ll be able to explore the new possibilities available to you when you really understand the value you bring to your organization and when that value is recognized, accepted, and applauded by your peers at the table.
