Editing Oracle TNS Name Files

Editing Oracle TNS Name Files

Any developer or DBA who works with multiple Oracle databases on many different servers will invariably end up at some point with a need to modify their Oracle TNS Names file. Some people will just open the file in a text editor and have at it. Others will use Oracle's Java utilities: Net Manager and Net Configuration Assistant. But all these approaches require leaving TOAD. And as before, the new and basic idea is that TOAD should support the complete development life cycle ”so that you never have to leave TOAD.

Thus TOAD offers the TNSNames Editor screen shown in Figure 9.46 and located on the main menu at Tools, TNSNames Editor. As you can see, this screen permits you to open two files so that you can see differences and copy entries between them using the < and > buttons .

You also can create or edit services as shown in Figure 9.47. This is much easier than remembering the cryptic and cumbersome syntax involved ”no more counting and matching parentheses. Plus it supports the more sophisticated options via the Advanced button as shown in Figure 9.48.
