Applying Other Video Transitions

Dissolves and wipes are just two of the different types of transitions you can apply to clips in your sequence. But there are eight other Video Transition bins to explore. Some of the transitions, such as Iris, act like a wipe and replace one clip's material with another's through a specific pattern. Others, such as 3D Simulation transitions, Page Peel, Slide, and Stretch, make changes to a clip's size and shape. Let's experiment with a few.

1.

Duplicate the Cuts sequence and name the duplicate My Sunset Fun. Open the sequence and play it. In the Timeline, click the RT pop-up menu and choose Unlimited RT to view more real-time effects.

2.

In the Browser Effects tab, collapse the Wipe bin and display the contents of the Page Peel bin.

Tip

Collapse the current transition bin before opening the next so you can access other transition bins more easily.

3.

Drag the Page Peel transition icon to the second edit point, between the boat dusk and distant sunset clips. Play this effect.

4.

Click the next edit point, between the distant sunset and glass lake clips, and this time choose Effects > Video Transitions > 3D Simulation > Cube Spin. Play this effect, or preview it by pressing Option-P.

Like Cross Dissolves, all other transitions can be applied by dragging an icon from the Effects tab directly to an edit point, or by selecting the edit point and choosing a transition option from the Effects menu.

5.

From the Video Transitions > QuickTime bin in the Effects tab, drag the Explode transition to the next edit point, between the glass lake and lavender sky clips, and play or preview it.

6.

From the Slide bin, drag the Multi Spin Slide icon to the next edit point, between the lavender sky and blue surf clips, and preview it.
