18.3. Installing Drives

 < Day Day Up >

The process of installing a CD-ROM, tape backup, or hard drive is very straightforward:

1. Shut down the server.

2. Open the chassis cover.

3. Find the appropriate position for the part.

4. Remove any placeholders.

5. Install the component.

Installing a hot-plug drive is even simpler because no shutdown is needed. Use these steps:

1. Pick a bay.

2. Insert the drive.

3. Secure the latch.

You must mount non-hot-plug devices using the included hardware (rails, screws, and so on.). If required, you must set the jumpers before mounting. Finally, for a non-hot-plug upgrade, you must connect power, drive, and other applicable cables. This kind of upgrade usually requires a Torx or Phillips-head screwdriver. After installing the part, save any included documentation and items removed from the server in case of future need.

At the next system POST, the server should report the new component, unless it is an IDE device. The server will automatically incorporate the upgrade and start the operating system without any intervention.

Hot-plug parts do not require jumper setting or system restarts and are incorporated automatically, with the exception of hot-plug hard drives. Hot-plug hard drives must be configured using the Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA) or the Array Configuration Utility (ACU) if an HP Smart Array controller is present. You might need to apply a software driver to the operating system, requiring a server restart.
