10.7. Service Considerations for All UPSs

 < Day Day Up >

A self-test can be run on any HP UPS by pressing the Test/Alarm/Reset button for three seconds. This button also resets an audible alarm when pressed for two seconds.

Access to the hot-swappable batteries is through the front panel. These batteries are to be replaced by service personnel only.

An optional Multi-Server UPS Card can be added that facilitates direct communication with up to three servers through the serial ports. The Scalable Card option enables three HP UPSs to work together as a virtual UPS.

Other than the hot-swappable batteries and add-on cards, the 700, 1000, 2000, and 3000 series are whole-unit replaceable. The 3000XR and 6000 have a replaceable electronics module. HP UPSs ship with a 3-3-3 warranty.

The sleep mode function is enabled by default, causing the UPS to shut itself down in approximately five minutes when it does not detect a minimum load for 5% to 10% attached to the UPS ports. This shutdown occurs independently of any software shutdown settings. Sleep mode is designed to save battery power. To prevent the sleep mode function from enabling with minimal load, disable it by following the steps outlined in the UPS user guide.

All HP UPSs make a clicking sound when the internal relay makes a switch from a buck-to-boost status or from a boost-to-buck status. This is a normal occurrence. If the UPS is clicking repetitively, run a self-test by following the steps outlined in the UPS user guide. If a problem is detected, an audio alarm sounds and an LED illuminates. If the self-test passes, have a qualified electrician test the A/C utility power for input voltage variations.

A high concentration of hardware connected to the same source of primary AC power through a UPS can cause damage to hardware or electrical shock to the user. Be sure to configure rack-based solutions in compliance with safety standards and electrical codes.

Moving a Multi-Server UPS Card or Scalable Card from an R3000 UPS (or earlier) into an R6000 UPS will produce the following error message:

 Communications Failure with UPS.

To eliminate the error, upgrade the UPS option card to the latest firmware version.

For the Multi-Server UPS Card ROM, use spares kit 341260-001.

For the Scalable Card ROM, use spares kit 105998-001.

When configured with an HP UPS and running HP Power Management agents, a Novell NetWare 5.x server with the multiprocessor option enabled may lose communication with the UPS and display an error message similar to the following at the console:

09/09/00 10:59am. Communications failure with UPS

To eliminate the error, update UPSBASE.NLM of the HP Power Management agents for NetWare 1.70, available as Softpaq SP12978.

Do not connect laser printers to a UPS because the printers pull an extensive load when powered on.

Warning

Never modify a UPS or the UPS power cord. Doing so could void the UPS warranty.
