What I didn't go into more detail about were the hours I spent downloading and recompiling the kernel, drivers, and tools, debugging code, and buying hardware to make my system work as fast as it possibly could without resorting to buying a new computer altogether. Will you have to go through what I did? That depends on your kernel versions, drivers, hardware, and software.
The most important thing that I can say is this: Do your research. Research the hardware and software before deciding on how to proceed with video production under Linux. It's only going to get better as more hardware is supported and the software becomes more sophisticated.
