Chapter Summary

Exchange 2000 Server extends the SMTP service of Windows 2000 during installation to implement Exchange-specific functionality through protocol and transport event sinks. In addition, the Mailroot directory is moved to Exchsrvr\Mailroot. Under Mailroot, a structure of one or many subdirectories exists, depending on the number of SMTP virtual servers that have been configured. Typically, one virtual server can handle all SMTP-based message transfer.

If you plan to connect an Exchange 2000 server directly to the Internet, you must make sure that incoming messages are delivered to your server. Your SMTP domain name must be registered in an MX record in the Internet DNS.

As soon as you are publicly known, you might become a target for unsolicited commercial messages, which you can filter to avoid their delivery. Further, relaying of messages from anonymous sources is blocked by default, which helps to protect your system resources. You can also implement advanced logic to check all incoming messages from the Internet for viruses and protect against malicious attempts to swamp your messaging infrastructure.
