Between the FRD and the actual development of the application, there's the all-important architectural work. In a small application, this could be negligible or might even be rolled into the development as you go along.

In larger projects, however, you need to keep everyone dancing to the same tune. This means, among other things, that you've thought out how you're going to represent the various objects that make up the application, and you've made a list of all the functionality that needs to be implemented so that none of the details fall through the cracks. This is where entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) and use cases come in.
