Summary

 <  Day Day Up  >

In this chapter, you learned how iFolder works. You learned how the iFolder server, iFolder client, and iFolder applet work together to provide users with anywhere access to their files.

You also learned how iFolder protects an organization's intellectual property by ensuring user files saved on workstation hard drives are synchronized to the iFolder server, where they can be regularly backed up.

In addition to iFolder, you learned about the NNLS version of Samba. You learned that Samba implements the SMB protocol, making your Linux server emulate a Windows file server. You learned that the NNLS version of Samba is tightly integrated with eDirectory through LDAP.

You also learned how to convert eDirectory users to LUM/Samba users. You learned how to configure Samba shares in the smb.conf file and how to access them with a Windows workstation.

In addition to iFolder and Samba, you also learned about the NNLS NetStorage service in this chapter. You learned that NetStorage provides users with web-based access to their server files using a browser. You learned that NetStorage provides access to users' iFolder accounts as well as Samba shares on the server.

You also learned that NetStorage uses Storage Location objects and Storage Location Lists to provide access to Samba shares. These control which users in the eDirectory tree can access them through the NetStorage interface.

In the next chapter, we'll add yet another service to our NNLS implementation that greatly increases user productivity: iPrint.
