Section 16.17 Caller ID

16.17 Caller ID

Some sites use Caller ID to record the phone number of everyone who dials into their systems to increase security. Although a caller can cause his phone number to be unobtainable to Caller ID, your response can be to drop the connection. Those sites with toll-free service for their modems can obtain the caller's phone number via ANI (Automatic Number Identification), which cannot be blocked. For those with large numbers of modems, these logs can be useful for later analysis. AOL used this technique to help catch a major cracker.
