6.4 Finding and Installing Backup

 < Day Day Up >

As with many of the .Mac applications, how you install Backup depends greatly on how you purchased your .Mac membership. If you purchased the boxed set from a retail outlet, Backup should be on the CD. And if you purchased and registered your .Mac membership through the online Apple Store, Backup can be found on your iDisk in /Software/Apple Software/Backup for OS X 10.2 . You can also download Backup from the Mac.com site by clicking on the link for Backup and logging in.

To install Backup, follow these steps:

  1. From either the CD or your iDisk, double-click on the Backup_2.0.dmg file. This mounts a disk image that contains the install package for Backup.

  2. In the window that pops up, double-click on the Backup.pkg file; this is the package file that's used to install Backup.

In addition to the Backup.pkg file, you will also see a file named "Read Before You Install Backup" in the disk image. You should take the time to read this file (double-clicking its icon opens the file in TextEdit) because it contains information you should know about before installing or upgrading your current version of Backup.

  3. The first screen of the installer prompts you to enter an administrator's password before the installation can proceed. In most cases, providing the password you use to log in to your Mac should work. Enter your password in the space provided and click on the OK button.

  4. Read through the next two screens of the installer, clicking the Continue button to proceed after you've read the information.

  5. Read through the Software License Agreement. If you agree to its terms and conditions, click on the Continue button. When you do this, a sheet will slide down from the Install Backup Software window's titlebar. If you agree to the terms of the license, click on the Agree button to proceed with the installation process.

If you don't agree with the terms of the license, click on the Disagree button. You cannot proceed with installing Backup on your system if you don't agree to the license. However, the Installer application won't quit by itself. Instead, you will need to quit the Installer manually by issuing the universal quit command, figs/command.gif -Q.

  6. Select the destination (drive or partition) where you would like Backup installed, and then click on the Install button. By default, Backup is installed in the Applications directory.

  7. Backup will install and your system will be optimized. When complete, you will see a message above the progress meter that says: "The software was successfully installed". To quit the Installer and return to using your Mac, click on the Close button.

  8. Close the window that contains the Backup.pkg file.

  9. Unmount the Backup 2.0 disk image by dragging it to the Trash, or by clicking on the Unmount icon next to the image in the Finder's Sidebar.

  10. Delete the Backup_2.0.dmg file (if you downloaded it to your Mac) by dragging the file to the Trash or selecting File Move to Trash ( -Delete) from the Finder's menu.

Now that Backup is installed on your Mac, you're about ready to start using it. But first, you should consider what you need to back up and how often you should perform the process.
