Bonjour lets you see all the iChat users on your local network immediately, and Jabber shows you all users currently logged into your network's Jabber server, but when it comes to talking with people who are elsewhere on the Internet, these technologies won't help you. In those situations, you have to rely on your Buddy List and the .Mac and AIM users listed there to connect you with them across large Internet distances.

iChat lets you select " buddies " from your Address Book or specify them manually. To add a buddy manually, you must know the .Mac or AIM account name they're using.

You must be connected to the Internet before you can add a buddy to your Buddy List.

1.
Open the Address Book Sheet

Launch iChat using the icon in the Dock or in the Applications folder; open the Buddy List window, if it is not already open (choose Buddy List from the Window menu).

Click the + button in the lower-left corner of the Buddy List window. This brings up a sheet that shows a simplified version of your Address Book, with your Groups at the left and the individual addresses on the right.

69. Add a Buddy

2.
Select a Person from Your Address Book

If the buddy you want to add is in your Address Book already, simply find his or her name in the list and double-click it.

TIP

You can filter the names by typing a partial name into the Search box at the top of the Address Book sheet.

3.
Add a New Person

To add a buddy manually to your Buddy List, click the New Person button at the bottom of the Address Book sheet. A new sheet appears, with form fields that allow you to specify the person's name and other information. This information adds the person to your Address Book as well as to your Buddy List in iChat.

You must know beforehand what kind of chat account the other person hasan AIM name or a .Mac account. The account name and type is the minimum information you need to have to add a new person. Contact the person through other means (such as email) to find out his information.

4.
Specify the Person's AIM or .Mac Account Name

From the Account Type drop-down list, select the type of account the person you want to add to your Buddy List has (.Mac or AIM), and then type the account name for that person.

5.
Fill in Address Book Information

If you leave the rest of the fields blank, this buddy will appear in your Buddy List with a generic picture icon and with his account name instead of a full name. To make the person's entry appear a little more streamlined in the Buddy List window, specify a first and last name and an email address here. This information will be added to the person's new address card, which is automatically created in your Address Book, and the full name appears in the Buddy List instead of the .Mac or AIM ID.

6.
Drag in a Picture

If this person has already specified a picture in his copy of iChat, that picture will appear next to the person's name in your Buddy List as soon as the person appears online. However, if you want, you can drag any picture into the Buddy Icon well to use instead, and this image will override any picture provided by your buddy.

7.
Add the Buddy

When you've specified all the pertinent information for the buddy you are adding to your Buddy List, click Add . The information sheet closes and your Buddy List updates to reflect the person's online status; if the person is online, his full name and picture will appear if they are specified by the other person. In addition to finding the person in your Buddy List, you will also find this person listed in a new card in your Address Book.
