9.3. VIDEO, DVDS, AND FLASH

9.3.1. Convert PowerPoint File to Video File

THE ANNOYANCE: How can I create a video of my PowerPoint file? On the Mac, there's an option to "Save as QuickTime Movie." How come PowerPoint doesn't have that on the PC?

THE FIX: If your slides have animation, you'll need to use screen-capturing software. If your slides are pictures with background music, you're better off using something like Windows Movie Maker (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx) or Photo Story (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx) to create the video file. You can download both programs from Microsoft for free. (See "Turn PowerPoint into Video" in Chapter 8 for more information.)

Microsoft and Apple, the creator of QuickTime, are competitors, so the chances of PowerPoint on the PC incorporating a "Save as QuickTime Movie" option are slim to none.

9.3.2. Record Presentation to VHS

THE ANNOYANCE: How can I record my presentation to VHS?

THE FIX: Look for an S-Video Out or an F-Connector on the back of your computer where your video card is located. This outputs your computer's display to other devices. Connect the computer's "video out" connection (the S-Video Out or F-Connector) to your VCR's "video in" connection using a cable with the proper plugs on either end. (You can usually get these at Radio Shack or similar stores.) Press the Record button on your VCR and play the presentation on your computer.

If you need professional quality video, contact a production house and let a professional do this conversion. If you really want to do it yourself, read the tutorial found on the following web site: http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/recordvhs.htm.

9.3.3. Create a DVD

THE ANNOYANCE: I want to put my presentation on a DVD my friends can watch on a regular DVD player hooked up to their TV. What's the best way to do this?

THE FIX: Creating a video DVD from a PowerPoint file is not a trivial thing to do. You must create an MPEG video of your PowerPoint file (see "Convert PowerPoint File to Video File") and use DVD-authoring software to create the DVD interface. Some higher-end DVD-authoring software imports PowerPoint files, but bewarethe software simply imports the slides as a series of images.

A couple of third-party tools create DVDs from your PowerPoint presentations. Each has a fully functioning trial version you can use to test with your presentation before purchasing. Because of the difficulty in translating PowerPoint files to DVD, you would be well advised to try before you buy:

If you're looking to create a DVD from a PowerPoint presentation, read Betsy Weber's how-to article (http://www.indezine.com/articles/powerpointtodvd.html). Also, Microsoft PowerPoint MVP TAJ Simmons has a very nice tutorial on creating DVDs from your presentations (http://www.awesomebackgrounds.com/powerpoint-to-dvd.htm). If you decide to capture video and use DVD-authoring software to create the interface, try one of the following authoring programs:
