Summary

In this chapter, you've learned that shooting live events can be as simple as videotaping an elementary school's class performanceor something much more complexdepending on the event and what you want your movie to be.

In this chapter, you've been introduced to some of the creative approaches you can take and explored extensive shot lists that provide many suggestions for what to shoot to get lots of life into your live event movies. And you've reviewed shots from a sample movie project that demonstrate how these shooting suggestions can be applied to create a simple movie.

This chapter also suggests several movies you can rent to better understand how professional movie makers have taken live events of everyday characters and situations and made them into compelling works of artsometimes even winning Academy Awards!

Using the steps outlined in this chapter should help you avoid the most common mistakes in live event movies:

  • Unintended shaky cam (because you've learned to use a tripod)

  • Too many zooms in and zooms out (because you've learned to use the Widen/Tighten control sparingly, if at all)

  • Poor audio (because miking the scene is especially important in live event movies)

Shooting a live event can be fun and easy and it gets even simpler over time. The more events you shoot, the more you'll learn how to shoot and how to edit.

You can be proud of what you've learned and chances are, your audience will thank you for it!
