During this backup, all files that changed on the day of the backup are backed up, and the archive bit is not changed in any file.

An Exchange server whose primary purpose is to hold public folder stores and from which the mailbox stores have been removed.
deleted-item retention time
The period that items in a public or private store deleted by users are actually retained on the Exchange server.
demilitarized zone (DMZ)
See perimeter network.
Destination Message queue
A temporary queue from which the SMTP service can read a message and pass it along.
diagnostics logging
You can configure many Exchange services to log several different levels of events to the Windows Event Log for use in troubleshooting.
differential backup
A method in which all files that have been changed since the last full backup are backed up. See also incremental backup.
digital signature
A process of digitally signing data using public and private keys so that the recipient of the data can verify the authenticity of both the sender and the data.
directory
A hierarchy that stores information about objects in a system. A Directory Service (DS) manages the directory and makes it available to users on the network.
directory replication
The transferring of directory information from one server to another. In Active Directory, directory information is replicated between domain controllers. In previous versions of Exchange, directory information is replicated between Exchange servers.
directory replication bridgehead server
In previous versions of Exchange, the Exchange server designated as the server that will send site directory information to another site. Only one server in a site can be assigned to replicate information with each remote site. There can be more than one directory replication bridgehead server in a site, but each must connect with a unique remote site. However, one server can perform directory replication with multiple remote sites.
directory rights
Used to configure the NTFS permissions that determine who can perform modifications on the public folder object that is stored in Active Directory.
Directory Service (DS)
In Exchange 5. x , creates and manages the storage of all information about Exchange objects, such as the organization, site, servers, mailboxes, distribution lists, and public folders. This functionality is assumed by Active Directory in Exchange Server 2003.
Disaster Recovery Mode
A mode in which you can run Exchange Server 2003 setup that lets you recover an Exchange installation after a failure.
discretionary access control list (DACL)
A list of Access Control Entries (ACEs) that give users and groups specific permissions on an object.
discussion thread
A collection of postings to a public folder related to a single subject.
dismounting
The process of taking a public or private store offline.
distribution group
An Active Directory group formed so that a single e-mail message can be sent to the group and then sent automatically to all members of the group. Unlike security groups, distribution groups don ‚ t provide any security function.
domain
A group of computers and other resources that are part of a Windows Server 2003 network and share a common directory database.
domain controller
A computer running Windows Server 2003 that validates user network access and manages Active Directory.
domain forest
A group of one or more domain trees that do not necessarily form a contiguous namespace but may share a common schema and Global Catalog.
Domain Name Service (DNS)
The primary provider of name resolution within an organization.
DomainPrep
An Exchange Server 2003 setup switch that is used to prepare an Active Directory domain prior to Exchange installation.
domain tree
A hierarchical arrangement of one or more Windows Active Directory domains that share a common namespace.
