The ESMTP command used by one host to initiate communications with another host.
e-mail
Electronic messages sent between users of different computers.
encryption
The process of scrambling data to make it unreadable. The intended recipient will decrypt the data into plaintext in order to read it.
Enterprise CA
Acts as a Certificate Authority for an enterprise and requires access to the Active Directory. See also Certificate Authority (CA).
Enterprise Edition
Edition of Exchange Server 2003 that contains all the features of the Standard Edition as well as the ability to have four storage groups with five stores each and also allows stores to be over 16 GB in size .
Event Log
A set of three logs (Application, Security, and System) maintained by Windows Server. The operating system and many applications, such as Exchange Server 2003, write software events to the Event Log.
Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard
Tool in System Manager that lets you select a user or group and assign them a specific administrative role in an Exchange organization. See also Exchange Administrator role, Exchange Full Administrator role, Exchange View-Only Administrator role.
Exchange Administrator role
Gives users the same full administrative capability as the Exchange Full Administrator role but does not give them permission to modify permissions for objects. See also Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard, Exchange Full Administrator role.
Exchange DSAccess
A component that enables other Exchange Server 2003 components to communicate with Active Directory using the LDAP protocol.
Exchange Full Administrator role
Gives users full administrative capability within an organization. They can add, delete, and rename objects, as well as modify permissions on objects. See also Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard.
Exchange Interprocess Communication Layer (ExIPC)
The process that manages several queues used for communications between IIS and Exchange Server 2003.
Exchange System Manager
A snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console used to manage an Exchange Server 2003 organization.
Exchange View-Only Administrator role
Lets users view Exchange configuration information but not modify it in any way. See also Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard.
expanding a distribution group
The process of determining the individual addresses contained within a distribution group. This process is performed by the home server of the user sending the message to the group unless an expansion server is specified for the group.
extended permissions
Permissions added to the standard Windows Server 2003 permissions when Exchange Server 2003 is installed.
Extensible Storage Engine (ESE)
The database engine used by Exchange Server 2003.
