Printing Wirelessly

A wireless printer instantly adds magical powers (well, okay, it just adds some more practical functionality) to your Tablet PC without a tangle of cords.

Some models, such as the Canon BJC-55 Bubble Jet are so compact (at 2.1 pounds) that you can take them along on the road pretty easily. Other printers are regular size; you wouldn’t want to drag one through an airport terminal without an entourage of porters helping you out.

(Now, I ask you — do you think your boss would approve that little item on your expense report?)

The HP DeskJet 350Cbi, for example, calls itself portable, but weighs in at 12 pounds. Twelve hefty pounds, plus 3 to 4 pounds of Tablet PC — along with its additional battery, power cord, a ream of paper — plus (oh, yes) clothing puts a heavy load on the frequent flyer. On the other hand, those who travel by car can pack one of these beauties in the trunk with little or no problem.

Tip  Also consider asking whether the business office of the hotel you’re visiting has a wireless or USB printer you can connect your Tablet PC to if you’re traveling light.

Wireless printers come in a wide variety of styles, from inkjet to laserjet, photo-quality printers to all-in-one devices that include a scanner, fax, printer, and copier functionality. You’ll need software, such as PrintConnect Suite that comes with HP infrared-enabled devices, to complete the connection and print. Prices range from about $175 to $300, though some high-end wireless models can be even pricier (think five or six hundred buckaroos).

Tip  Chapter 15 gives you some interesting pointers on how portable printers can be used in conjunction with Tablet PC in a variety of industry settings.
