G.711
One of the major ITU-T codec ( coder -decoder) standards for audio (voice and music), G.711 can be incorporated into broader multimedia standards, such as H.320 and H.323, or used on its own for computer telephony. G.711 specifies an audio signal with a 3.4KHz bandwidth (that is, an ordinary analog voice signal) over a 64Kbit/sec data path . Related standards include G.722, which defines a 64kbit/sec 7.0KHz bandwidth audio stream, and the lower-bandwidth G.728 standard, which defines a 16Kbit/sec 3.4KHz audio stream. For computer-based audio over narrow- band phone lines, there's G.723, which supports a compressed 3.4KHz signal over a POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) line and is used in the H.324 multimedia standard. See H.320, H.323, H.324.
gateway.
In OSI terminology, a gateway is a device or process that connects two dissimilar systems, such as a PC on a LAN and a mainframe. It operates on all seven layers of the OSI model. In Internet terminology, a gateway is another name for a router.
global network.
A global network spans all departments, campuses, branch offices, and subsidiaries of a corporation. Global networks are international, and bring with them the problems of dealing with multiple languages, cultures, standards, and telephone companies.
Government OSI Profile (GOSIP).
GOSIP is the U.S. government's specification for OSI conformance. Some level of GOSIP support has been required for all bids made on government projects, though it is unclear that it will be required in the future.
