INTRODUCTION

Word enables you to indent paragraphs from the left margin, the right margin, or both. You can also create a first-line indent, which indents only the first line of a paragraph, or a hanging indent, which indents all of the lines except the first. Word provides several ways to set indents. Here, you learn to add indents by dragging the indent markers on the ruler. To undo any indent you set, select the indented paragraphs and then drag the appropriate marker back to its original position on the ruler.

TIP

Why Is My Marker Gray?

If you select multiple paragraphs, any indent markers that apply to some ”but not all ”of the selected paragraphs will appear light gray on the ruler. If you move a light gray indent marker, it will apply that indent to all the selected paragraphs.
