INTRODUCTION
Word enables you to indent paragraphs from the left margin, the right margin, or both. You can also create a first-line indent, which indents only the first line of a paragraph, or a hanging indent, which indents all of the lines except the first. Word provides several ways to set indents. Here, you learn to add indents by dragging the indent markers on the ruler. To undo any indent you set, select the indented paragraphs and then drag the appropriate marker back to its original position on the ruler.
TIP
Why Is My Marker Gray?
If you select multiple paragraphs, any indent markers that apply to some ”but not all ”of the selected paragraphs will appear light gray on the ruler. If you move a light gray indent marker, it will apply that indent to all the selected paragraphs.
To set a right indent, first select the paragraphs that you want to indent.
Drag the Right Indent marker to the desired position on the ruler. As you drag, the text is indented. When it's in the right spot, release the mouse button.
Click anywhere to deselect the text.
TIP
Setting First Line Indents
To create a first line indent, select the desired paragraphs and then drag the First Line Indent marker (the top triangle above the Left Indent marker).
TIP
Setting Hanging Indents
To create a hanging indent, select the desired paragraphs and then drag the Hanging Indent marker (the bottom triangle directly above the Left Indent marker).
TIP
Locating the Correct Indent Marker
If you're not sure which indent marker is which, try pointing to one. A ScreenTip will appear to tell you which marker you're pointing to.
