Acknowledgments

It is always amazing, isn't it, how a small turn here or there can lead to a major development. Taking that unmarked road may lead to a wonderful site or experience that we would otherwise just pass by. So, too, with this book. If it weren't for being naive enough to think I could teach an Oracle database class, I never would have seen the blank looks on the faces of the students in front of me when I showed them examples of "native" Oracle documentation, and I never would have thought, "There must be a better way," which is what led to writing the class syllabus, then to creating a couple of handouts, and finally to authoring this book.

So, I thank those brave and very bright students whose blank looks were the start of this project: Soju Daniel, April DeMartino, Syed Husains, Michael Sweet, and Chris Szewczyk. However, I never would have set foot in that classroom if it weren't for a dreamer and resident creative sparkplug, Dr. Gary Rommel of Eastern Connecticut State University. He pushed me into the classroom and constantly encouraged me, challenged me, and kept me aware that Eastern Connecticut State University exists for the sake of the students.

No manuscript ends up the way it starts, and many thanks go to those who patiently walked through page after page of acronyms, jargon, diagrams, and prints, making corrections and offering their advice: Dr. Richard Saley, Mr. Roman Baltram, Mr. William Becker, Mr. Declan Brady, Ms. Heidi Thorpe, and Mr. Fred Zarnowski.

Thanks to my parents, Joseph and Helen Staron. Little did they ever imagine that all those trips to the library when I was a little kid would ever result in this!

And finally, thanks to Tyrrell Albaugh, Mary O'Brien, Alicia Carey, Patrick Cash-Peterson, Chanda Leary-Coutu, and Brenda Mulligan at Addison-Wesley and Jimmie Young at Tolman Creek Design for their organizational and scheduling talents. Thanks to Cecile Kaufman, Joeth Barlas, and Nancy Fulton for their work during production, and a very special and sincere thank you to Stephanie Hiebert, whose editing talents and dedication transformed many a page into clear, readable text.
