5.9 Exercises

  1. What are some typical sizes of routing tables in the following: DSL routers, edge routers, and core routers.?

  2. Look up the data sheets of popular switching devices (e.g., those from Broadcom, Marvell). Determine the size of the MAC filtering table for Layer 2 tables, and write a note on how it scales as we add more ports (and more switching devices).

  3. Construct a spreadsheet for the table requirements for a router. List all the tables with the typical sizes as a function of the number of entries in the table. Modify the sizing parameters to observe how the memory requirements change.

  4. List some table access routines for a protocol control block.
