Summary

In this chapter, we reviewed the techniques used to publish SMTP and Exchange mail services. In the first part, you learned how to publish SMTP and Exchange mail services on the ISA server. Publishing Exchange 2000 services on the ISA server has been a long misunderstood subject that has never, until the publication of this book, been adequately explained to the public. There are a number of procedures you must go through in order to prevent conflict so you'll be able to get all the services to work together and publish the Exchange services among the Exchange services, the ISA server, and the Internet Information server.

We also covered how to publish Exchange mail services on the internal network. The procedures are very similar and in many ways much easier because you don't need to run IIS services on the ISA server. You can also leverage the automation provided by the Secure Mail Services Wizard to make your server publishing rules and protocol rules. Publishing mail services on the internal network is the preferred configuration because you don't have to worry about weaknesses in any of the Exchange services compromising your firewall.
