Capturing Audio Only

Premiere is known for its professional digital video editing capabilities. But don't overlook its high-end nonlinear audio editing capabilities. Premiere provides a streamlined process for capturing only audio:

  • To capture only audio on a Windows system, you need to digitize via the Movie Capture feature or use a separate audio capture application, such as Sound Forge or Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder. These applications allow you to digitize and create wave files (.WAV). You must then import them into Premiere as a secondary step.

  • To capture only audio on a Macintosh (as long as it has A/V inputs), you can capture audio directly from Premiere.

  • Use your IEEE 1394 connection to transfer audio source material.

Audio-only clips are displayed in Premiere with a waveform icon. Premiere (Windows and Macintosh versions) can import many different types of digital audio files, including the following:

  • .AVI

  • .MOV

  • .AIFF

  • .WAV

note

The Macintosh version can also import Sound Designer I and II file formats.

note

Premiere does not support the CDA file format (the audio format found on a standard audio CD). You can convert it using other utilities and then import it into Premiere.
