Chapter 14 -- Adding Visual Impact with Pictures

Chapter 14

You've probably heard that "a picture is worth a thousand words," and that's not just rhetoric. Think about what we see around us on the Web, in our mailboxes, in the newspaper, on TV—words alone don't cut it. We want color; we want pictures; we want style. All by themselves, words don't capture our attention or ignite our imaginations. Even this book, although it's communicating information you want and need, wouldn't be as effective without the careful design of the pages (making it easier for you to read) and the pictures of screens, captured to show you what to look for as you try the procedures for yourself.

A picture can show at a glance what it takes words time to create. In a report, you'll need an entire paragraph (or a page!) to explain how a new product goes through a development cycle, but showing a photo of the process —or better yet, a diagram—will let your readers know instantly what the whole process looks like. This chapter explores ways you can use Word to bring images into your documents that add spark, interest, and more effective communication elements to the work you create.
