Now that the Internet has emerged from its infancy, businesses and individuals are continually finding innovative ways to take advantage of the Internet's rapidly improving features and capabilities. As you know, the Internet—which was once limited to serving as a collection of text files, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) file repositories, bulletin boards, and newsgroups—now offers full-service online businesses, streaming video, real-time data, software updates, support services, interactive forms, and much more. Not surprisingly, Microsoft has had its eye on seamlessly integrating desktop applications and the Internet for years. (In fact, Microsoft clearly stated its vision in the early 1990s.) As you'll see in this chapter, Microsoft continues its trend toward incorporating Internet capabilities into Microsoft Word.
