The Bottom Line

One of Microsoft's big themes for Windows XP is, "it just works." I'd have to agree with that statement. This is the operating system I've been waiting for since the release of Windows 95.

So if you remember nothing else about Windows XP, remember these key points:

  • Windows XP is a 32-bit operating system that melds the stability of Windows NT/2000 with the user friendliness of Windows 9X/Me.

  • You need a relatively new and relatively powerful PC to run Windows XP and the more memory, the better.

  • Three different versions of Windows XP exist. Windows XP Home Edition contains all the features you need for home and small business use and Windows XP Professional contains additional functionality for corporate networks. The third version, Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, isn't a consideration for most users unless you have Intel's new Itanium 64-bit processor.

  • The latest version of Windows XP or older versions with Service Pack 1 or 2 installed lets you change the default programs you use for various activities.

  • Most of your old hardware and software should work fine with Windows XP, although some software might have to be run in Compatibility Mode and extremely old scanners and peripherals might be a problem.

  • Windows XP introduces a task-based approach to common operations. Activity center panes in My Documents and other folders list the most common tasks you're likely to perform.
