Chapter 8. Searching for University, Technical, and Government Information


As you learned in Chapter 7, "Searching for Scholarly Information," Google Scholar offers a great resource for those searching for scholarly articles, papers, and the like. But Google Scholar isn't the only Google site of interest to students and researchers. There's a lot of good information to be found on the websites of major colleges and universities, which Google facilitates through the site-specific Google University Search.

Google University Search is just one of several "special searches" that Google offers to its users. Of similar construct are four technology-related searches (for Microsoft, Apple, Linux, and BSD Unix) and a single large U.S. Government Search, which searches governmental websites. All of these special searches work in the same fashion, automatically restricting searches to a range of sites most appropriate to the search.
