Arranging to Pay Your Fees

If you intend to sell items on eBay, you'll have to pay eBay for that privilege. In particular, eBay charges a listing fee when you post an item for auction, and a final value fee when you sell an item. These fees are charged automatically to your accountwhich is why you have to choose an appropriate method of payment when you create your eBay seller's account. In particular, you need to provide eBay with either your credit card or checking account number for direct withdrawal of all your eBay fees. You can also choose to pay your eBay fees by check or money order, although it's somewhat of a hassle and not encouraged.

If you ever move, you'll need to change the address and phone number information eBay has on file. Just go to the Site Map page, scroll to the My eBay section, and click the item you want to change: User ID, Password, Registration Information, E-Mail Address, and so on.

To activate payment via credit card, follow these steps:

  1. Go the eBay Site Map page and click Place or Update my Credit Card on File with eBay (in the Seller Accounts section of the Services section).

  2. When the credit card submission form appears (see Figure 10.2), enter your user ID or email address, password, and credit card billing information, then check the I Would Like to Use This Credit Card to Pay Seller Fees option.

  2. When the Direct Pay submission form appears, enter your name, your bank's name , your bank's routing number, and your checking account number.

I recommend you go with credit card billing. I don't like the idea of eBay (or any other company) having automatic access to my checking account; who knows if I'll have enough funds on tap the day they decide to make the automatic withdrawal? Credit card payment is easy and just as automatic, with few (if any) hassles.

Your payment information will be applied to your eBay account within 1224 hours.
