Setting Up Your Email Account

Back in Chapter 21, "Connecting to the Internet," you learned how to configure your computer for your particular Internet service provider. When you did your main configuration, you should have entered information about your email account.

If you later change email providers, or add a new email account, you'll have to access your email settings separately. To configure Outlook Express for a new email account, you'll need to know the following information:

  • The email address assigned by your ISP, in the format name@domain.com.

  • The type of email server you'll be using; it's probably a POP3 server. (It could also be an HTTP, IMAP, or SMTP server, but POP3 is more common.)

  • The address of the incoming email server and the outgoing mail server.

  • The account name and password you use to connect to the email servers.

Once you have this information (which should be supplied by your ISP), you can enter it manually into Outlook Express by following these steps:

  1. From within Outlook Express, select Tools, Accounts to display the Internet Accounts dialog box.

  2. Select the Mail tab.

  3. To change the settings for an existing account, select the account and click Properties.

  4. To enter a new account, click the Add button and select Mail.

  5. When the Properties dialog box appears, select the General tab, then enter a name for this account, your name (first and last), and the email address assigned by your ISP.

To avoid entering your password every time you check your email, select the Remember Password option in the Properties dialog box.

  6. Select the Servers tab and enter the following information: type of server, incoming email server address, outgoing email server address, your assigned account name, and your password.

  7. Click OK.

You're now ready to send and receive email.
