Default Services Memory Consumption

In general, Windows 2000 has been optimized so that only the most commonly used services run by default, and you should not have to turn off any services. However, you can reduce the memory requirements of your system by turning off some of the default services provided by the operating system.

To stop a service

  1. From the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Right-click the name of a service, and then click Stop.

This procedure stops the service for the current session. To disable the service permanently, you need to change the value for service start-up in the properties dialog box for the service. To use this dialog box, click Services in the Administrative Tools menu or under the Computer Management console. Right-click the service you want to change, select Properties in the shortcut menu, and change the value to Disabled in the Startup type box.
