The Microsoft software to be installed and configured includes the Windows 2000 operating system, Host Integration Server 2000, and SQL Server 2000. The Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 needed for connecting to IBM DB2 is included as part of Host Integration Server 2000. The OLE DB Provider for DB2 can be installed on Host Integration Server 2000 server computers as well as on Host Integration Server 2000 client systems. The model solution that will primarily be discussed in this section assumes that SQL Server 2000 and Host Integration Server 2000 will be installed on the same computer running some version of Windows 2000 Server software (Server, Advanced Server, DataCenter Server).
Host Integration Server 2000 provides core SNA gateway functions as well as data and application integration features such as the OLE DB Provider for DB2. The Host Integration Server 2000 server system can communicate with the AS/400 system using the System Network Architecture (SNA) protocols.
For this scenario, we assume that the Host Integration Server 2000 is to be installed on the same system as SQL Server 2000 so that the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 can be used with SQL Server Data Transformation Services.
Host Integration Server 2000 includes two clients for connecting to the server:
Although it is not essential for the proposed scenario, it is useful to install the Host Integration Server 2000 Administrator Client on any computers running Windows 2000 Professional or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation that are used for administration. The Host Integration Server 2000 Administrator Client can be used to remotely configure and manage Host Integration Server installations.
