In summary, to remain competitive in the coming years, many suppliers will need to support the exchange of electronic business documents with their customers. There are a couple of purchasing models under which the primary interactions involved in shopping, choosing products, and placing orders, can occur. In addition, the format of the electronic business documents will vary based on the (XML) standard adopted. Because customers, as opposed to suppliers, will typically be driving decisions about shopping models and document formats, suppliers who can support multiple and changing models and formats with multiple customers will be best positioned for success.
