This chapter is intended to give you a brief introduction to certain emerging trends. In addition to the technologies mentioned, ASP and PHP will continue to evolve, as will DBMSs such as Access and MySQL.

Talking about emerging trends is risky. It could be that the technologies mentioned here will not achieve the presence predicted, but be replaced by something very different. In any case, you can continue your education by investigating the online sources given in the next section and ones you find on your own. When visiting a Web, be sure to keep in mind whether it is a strictly commercial site or the site of an organization attempting to establish an open standard. This is not to imply that the commercial sites are suspect and the organizational sites are not, but the distinction is one factor to keep in mind. You also should investigate the acceptance of the standard. Technology and business considerations cannot be separated in the area of Web development.
