Exam Highlights

Before taking the exam, review the key points and terms that are presented in this chapter. Return to the lessons for additional practice.

Key Points

  • SMTP transfers e-mail messages using a series of plain-text commands that are passed from a sending host to a receiving host. The receiving host responds using numerical codes. ESMTP extends SMTP functionality.

  • You can control Internet access by creating and configuring additional SMTP virtual server and SMTP connectors. You can use these to configure incoming and outgoing connections, to control relaying, and to configure security settings.

  • You can use an SMTP connector when you require a pull relationship between servers, and configure this connector to retrieve e-mail in a queue from a remote SMTP server at specified intervals.

  • Exchange Server 2003 supports connectivity to other SMTP systems through the configuration of an SMTP connector as an Internet mail connector and the configuration of global defaults.

  • POP3 and IMAP4 clients can retrieve mail from Exchange Server 2003 mailboxes. These clients use SMTP to send mail. Per-user settings override global defaults for specific users.

Key Terms

Extended Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (ESMTP) An extension of the basic Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) that provides additional commands for server communication.

Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4) An Internet messaging protocol that enables a client to access mail on a server rather than downloading it to the user's computer.

Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) An Internet protocol that allows a user to download mail from their inbox on a server to the client computer where messages are managed.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) An Internet standard for transporting and delivering electronic messages. SMTP is the default transport for Exchange Server 2003.
