Using an External Image Editor Within Aperture

Although you can perform essential image processing in Aperture, there may be processes you want to perform in an external application such as Adobe Photoshop. Aperture allows you to seamlessly edit your images in the application of your choice without having to exit Aperture or move images out of your Aperture Library.

1.

Choose Aperture > Preferences.

2.

In the External Editor area, click Set.

3.

Navigate to your preferred application in the Applications folder and click Select.

4.

Choose TIFF or PSD as your preferred export format from the File Format pop-up menu.

5.

Close the Preferences dialog.

6.

Select an image and choose Images > Open with External Editor.

Note

If you want to edit an image that is in a stack, you'll need to expand the stack and manually select the desired image.

Aperture will create a new version of your image, the external editor application will launch, and you can begin to make your adjustments.

7.

Once you have finished editing, press Command-S to save the file.

Note

There is no need to perform a Save As operation. Aperture keeps track of the name and location of your file. The image you edit externally will be added to the Aperture Library and safely stored with all your other versions.

8.

Click on the Aperture icon in the Dock to return to Aperture.

You will notice a short pause as the Library updates. Aperture will refresh and display the changes you made to the edited version.
