Chapter 18: Knowing When to Call the Professionals

Overview

Sometimes, regardless of your best efforts and how many different times you’ve reread the instructions or troubleshooting recommendations, you just have to call for help.

In this last chapter, I’m going to explain why product warranties can be important and the limitations you face in exercising them. I’ll also answer that time-honored question, “When do I take a problem product back to the store, and when do I go to the manufacturer to repair it?”

Just as critical, I’ll describe what information you need to have on hand before you call for assistance and how you can increase your chances of success when you do call. You’ll be amazed at how politeness, organization, and limiting your distractions can get you the results you want.

And finally, I’ll discuss insurance reimbursement for nasty disasters. You should consider this before disaster hits because you might not be covered as well as you think, or you might not be covered at all.
