Microsoft has estimated that there are more than 400 million Office users around the world. That's a large number, to be sure, but it shouldn't come as a big surprise. After all, you only have to ask around a bit to realize that, for all intents and purposes, everyone uses at least a subset of the Office suite. (More evidence: Microsoft's share of the productivity suite market is more than 90%.)

What this means in the real world is that we all use Office for a variety of documents, from simple letters to full-blown corporate budgets. Inevitably, some of those documents will be vitally important, either to you personally or to your business, or they'll be of a sensitive or private nature. Whatever the reason, you might be looking for increased security, either because you want to protect important data or because you want to restrict access to sensitive data. Whether it's preservation or privacy you seek, Outlook 2003 offers a number of tools that can help you secure your documents, and you learn about many of them in this chapter.
