Chapter 2: Network Fundamentals and Security Concerns

In This Chapter

  • Introducing networking

  • Network models explained

  • Introduction to TCP/IP

  • Network addressing and names

  • Understanding bridges, routers, and gateways

Networking can be a confusing subject, but it doesn’t have to be. The material in this chapter will make it easier for you to understand some of the threats that I introduce in later chapters. It can also help you when it comes time to troubleshoot some of the technical pitfalls you’ll likely encounter when using wireless networking devices.

This chapter introduces some networking terms and technology, and I attempt to explain, clearly and concisely, how much of it works. Don’t panic. The techno-babble is minimal and the information that is presented is limited to what you need in order to get the most out of the material in subsequent chapters.
